Most people aren’t born knowing how to travel and if/ when we get the chance to travel, a lot of mistakes are made at the beginning. Travel savvy is the result of missed buses, foolish behavior, cultural ignorance, and countless small mistakes. Then, one day, you find yourself gliding through airports and assimilating into new cultures like a fish in its natural habitat.
I want to help you speed up the process and avoid some of the common mistakes (which are mostly made), so I compiled this simple list of my best travel tips that cover everything under the sun to help you reach your full travel savviness potential.
Pack Light
Start by purchasing a modest backpack/suitcase (about 35/40 liters). You’ll be compelled to pack light and carry as little as possible. Take half of what you believe you’ll need when it comes to packing. The truth is that you will not require nearly as much as you believe. Make a list of everything you’ll need, pack only what you’ll need, and only bring that! Plus, as I previously indicated, your small backpack won’t have many places for other goods!
Dress Comfortably
Depending on the part of the world you are visiting, and if the weather permits, you should dress lightly while maintaining your sense of style.
This is especially vital if you are on a business trip. Forget about party dresses that aren’t suitable for other occasions. Choose more versatile and adaptable clothing that will save you space in your luggage. A slip dress and black shoes are good examples. Men should wear black slacks, a white shirt, and a versatile blazer.
Carry your Travel Essentials
These are the few essential items you may require while traveling. A small towel, pain/allergy medication, ointment, hand sanitizer, and an extra bank/credit card are all needed. Make additional copies of your passport and other crucial documents. Also, send yourself some copies through email. You might end up needing them.
It’s also a good idea to have a backup credit card in case something goes wrong, such as being robbed or losing your card. You don’t want to be stranded in a new location without your money.
Book flights 2-3 months in advance
Unless your trip is around a busy holiday or peak travel time, or you have extremely precise travel dates, the optimal time to book a flight is 1–3 months ahead for local travel and 2–8 months ahead for international travel.
Purchasing travel insurance is a critical step in ensuring your safety while traveling. In the event of an accident, you may be robbed or have your flight canceled. Your travel insurance is a cost-effective tool to get you out of any situation.
Learn common phrases in the native language of the place you going to visit
Learning a few local words can actually go a long way and it will be appreciated by the locals during your interactions. It is not necessary to be fluent in the language, but knowing a few phrases such as “Hello,” “Goodbye,” and “Thank you!” will ensure some ease in communication between you and the locals. They will appreciate your efforts!
